Changes at Military Museum

Your Museum has been busy this spring preparing new displays, planning annual events and changing operations. We are pleased to announce we are now open five days a week - Wednesday thru Sunday, from Noon until 4:00 p.m.! This allows visitors more opportunities to view our displays and exhibits and learn more about military heritage. Speaking of exhibits, Archivist Gina Cassidy and Chief of Staff Geoff Cannon have been creating a new display, 'Women in the Military', and features items from Portland native Connie Van Hoomissen, WWII Army Lieutenant. The display is still growing and will eventually include some of Gina's own artifacts, so be sure to stop in and check it out! In addition, our neighbor to the south, Coos History Museum in Coos Bay, also has an outstanding display "I Am Not Invisible" dedicated to women Veterans. Saturday June 16th will be our second annual "Jeep Junction" event at Johnston Motor Co. where we celebrate the birth of the 'jeep' in WWII, and the iconic vehicle it has become. You can find details on our website - be sure to bring Dad out for a treat on Father's Day weekend! Save the Date: for two important events coming later this summer: Saturday July 7th will be our annual anniversary celebration; Saturday September 22nd will be our first annual OCMM Golf Tournament - you can find more information on our website and updates will come through out the summer. Lastly, as we approach our busy Rhody weekend here in Florence, don't forget that Saturday May 19th is also Armed Forces Day when we recognize all of our active military armed forces. Be sure to stop, reflect, and thank our active military personnel as well as our Veterans, for their service to our country! Thanks! Cal Applebee Executive Director
