About the event
Join the Museum and guest speaker Cal Applebee, a Florence resident and author of the Military Heritage Chronicles, in a presentation on three Oregonians who served in the First and Second World Wars. Learn about their service and how they made an impact on Oregon's historical record and ultimately the history of the United States. From Veteran's marching to Washington D.C. to request the immediate payment of their bonuses to the takedown of the mastermind behind the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Oregonians played an important role in these historic events of American History.
The Veteran perspectives that will be present include:
- Sergeant Walter Waters, a Native Oregonian who served in World War One and became the Leader of the "Bonus Army" and went on to serve in the Navy during the Second World War.
- General Ben King, who served in the Army Air Forces as a Fighter Ace and went on to attain the rank of Brigadier General.
- Colonel Rex Barber, who served with the Army Air Forces and is accredited in Oregon with shooting down Japanese Admiral Yamamoto.
