The Oregon Coast Military Museum Board of Directors is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards and upholding the integrity of the Museum's mission to honor and preserve the stories of our nation’s Veterans. Over the past month, we have been fully cooperating with an investigation led by the Department of Justice Charitable Activities division to ensure that the Museum is in full compliance with all legal and ethical guidelines, particularly in relation to conflicts of interest and the ongoing allegations.
In an effort to comply with the investigation and address concerns, the Board is providing all necessary documentation for the past several years. Additionally, we have sought legal counsel to ensure that all actions moving forward align with non-profit best practices and legal standard; Unfortunately, finding the appropriate non-profit legal counsel with the needed expertise took longer than expected due to availability. As part of this process, the Museum’s Director was terminated by the Board members who were not affected by any conflicts of interest. Those Board members with potential conflicts abstained from the discussion and decision-making, in accordance with best practices for non-profit governance.
Board members with conflicts of interest in the ongoing matter have resigned from the Board and are supporting the transition of administration, a process that has been underway since July. Over the last two months, we have made concerted efforts to recruit new members from the community to join the Board and facilitate a smooth transition. Unfortunately, some of these individuals withdrew their applications, either after facing direct threats from both within and outside the community or due to their inability to commit sufficient time during these challenging times. Threats of violence targeting Museum volunteers, who continue their efforts to preserve our Veterans’ collections, have also been reported, prompting legal involvement and further investigation.
The incoming Board will also be working on reviewing and revising the policies and procedures of the Museum to improve and expand upon administrative, financial, leadership, oversight, and personnel practices for the betterment of the facility, the safety of its team members and community, and the growth of the organization.
We understand the gravity of the situation and the importance of the ongoing investigation. We are fully committed to the pursuit of justice. However, we respectfully request that any inquiries related to the investigation and specific allegations be directed to the defendant's attorney.
Despite the challenges and delays we have faced, the Museum remains dedicated to its mission of honoring our Veterans and preserving their stories for future generations. The remaining Board members, as well as our volunteers, continue to work tirelessly to ensure the Museum’s survival and the continuation of its important work.
We deeply appreciate the understanding and support of our community as we navigate these difficult times, and we are hopeful that, with time, the Museum will emerge stronger, more transparent, and even more dedicated to our shared mission of honoring those who have served.
Thank you.
